Canto is one of the most popular digital asset management platforms for mid-sized marketing teams. Reviewers consistently praise how easy it is to adopt and how responsive its support is, and in late 2025 it relaunched as "Canto XI" with a redesigned interface and built-in AI. In 2026 it has leaned further into product content, with Shopify and Amazon sync for product-led brands.

Creative teams start looking at Canto alternatives for a few recurring reasons: search that gets harder as the library grows, slow uploads and downloads with large video files, add-on costs, or a workflow that has moved from marketing assets to hundreds of ad creatives a month. That last group needs briefs, reviews, naming and ad performance data around the library.

We went through G2 reviews, vendor pricing pages and our own sales conversations to put this list together. It covers these Canto alternatives and where each one fits:

The biggest pain point for ad creative teams: Canto is built for marketing and product content

Canto has a lot going for it. Its higher packages include AI search and tagging, approvals with an audit trail, customizable brand portals and on-brand templates for field teams. It integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Canva, Slack, Shopify and Hootsuite without extra integration fees.

IT teams get SAML SSO, multi-factor login, SOC 2 testing, ISO 27001 certification and AWS hosting in the region of your choice. Canto also collected a long list of G2 badges in 2026, including Best Usability.

The friction shows up in three places, based on what reviewers and buyers we speak with tell us.

Search at scale. "Search difficulties" is the most common complaint in Canto's G2 reviews. As libraries grow, finding the right file gets harder, especially when tags aren't applied consistently.

Large files. Several reviewers mention slow or stalled uploads and downloads with large files, which matters when most of your library is video.

The workflow around the ad. Canto's product direction is product data and ecommerce, with storefront sync for Shopify and Amazon. Its Facebook integration shares images and videos to pages and groups, rather than to ad accounts. Briefing, review cycles with agencies, uploads to Meta and TikTok ad accounts and the link back to ad performance happen in other tools.

Canto is a strong DAM for the marketing and product teams it was built for. It's just a different job from producing and testing ad creative every sprint.

Here's how the alternatives compare.

1. Focal: a DAM built for performance ad creative

Focal is the only tool on this list built around how ad creative is made, launched and learned from.

Every asset is tagged automatically on upload with your own attributes, like hook, format, angle and language. You can search by what's actually in an image or video, including scenes, spoken words and on-screen text, down to a single frame.

Around the library sits the rest of the workflow: briefs and production boards, frame-accurate reviews with agencies in their own guest view, and naming conventions applied on upload.

Approved creatives upload straight to Meta and TikTok ad accounts and YouTube.

Meta performance data connects back to each asset without depending on ad names, so the team sees what ran and what worked next to the file itself. Through Focal MCP, Claude and other AI tools can work with that whole record.

Supercell's UA creative team produces dozens of new concepts and variants every week with multiple external partners. Before Focal, briefs, feedback rounds and approvals were spread across tools, and searching the asset library was manual. With AI-generated descriptions and metadata applied on upload, asset search time dropped by 75%, and approved assets are renamed to Supercell's naming convention automatically.

"Focal has allowed me to double my creative output and has dramatically sped up our creative approvals and management."

Peter McLaughlin, Head of Creative Studio, Supercell (read the case study)

Best for: teams producing 100+ ad creatives a month who want the asset library, briefs, reviews, naming, channel uploads and performance data in one platform.

Worth knowing: Focal is newer than most DAMs here, with a 4.7/5 rating on G2 from far fewer reviews, and it doesn't include product information management (PIM) the way Canto does. Large creative operations can take some effort to set up, although dedicated onboarding help is included.

Focal also offers a free trial, so you can see if it matches your needs.

2. Bynder: the enterprise brand DAM

Bynder appears on every Canto alternatives list we looked at, usually as the step up for larger organizations. It covers brand portals, guidelines and templates, with rights management, configurable permissions and SSO in every package, more than 160 integrations and Leader ratings from both Gartner and Forrester. In 2026 it added AI agents, a brand compliance agent and an MCP server. G2 shows around 4.5/5 from 1,000+ reviews.

Best for: large organizations whose priority is brand governance across many teams, markets and partners.

Worth knowing: it's quote-only and modular, and buyer-reported contracts on Vendr land around $40,000 a year at the median (February 2026), usually more than Canto. Reviewers mention a significant taxonomy setup effort.

3. Brandfolder: wide distribution with a mature permission model

Brandfolder, owned by Smartsheet since 2020, is the other DAM that shows up on every Canto alternatives list. Its permission model is built for sharing with a large audience, with owner, admin, collaborator and guest roles and SSO users who can default to view-only. Its Premium tier adds SAML SSO, publish and expiry dates, document OCR and video AI that tags footage, detects scenes and transcribes speech. G2 shows around 4.4/5 from 1,400+ reviews.

Best for: marketing organizations that share approved assets with many internal and external users, especially teams already on Smartsheet.

Worth knowing: pricing is quote-only, with buyer-reported contracts on Vendr around $25,000 a year at the median (February 2026), and reviewers mention paid add-ons and slower search in large folders.

4. Acquia DAM: enterprise DAM with product content

Acquia DAM, formerly Widen, is G2's most-suggested Canto alternative and the closest match if you rely on Canto for product content. It combines an enterprise DAM with product information management, reviewers praise its metadata tools and external portals, and it works with or without the rest of Acquia's platform. It added an MCP server in July 2026. G2 shows around 4.4/5 from 600+ reviews.

Best for: enterprises with very large libraries and lots of product content.

Worth knowing: pricing is quote-only, and reviewers rate setup as harder than day-to-day use.

5. Air: a modern, visual DAM with unlimited users

Air is a visual, quick-to-learn library with AI search that recognizes what's in images, video and documents, plus video review with timestamped comments, version stacks and approvals. Every plan includes unlimited users. On Enterprise plans, Air also connects Meta ad performance to assets. G2 shows around 4.6/5 from 800+ reviews.

Best for: brand and content teams that want a fast, modern library with built-in review and broad access.

Worth knowing: pricing is credit-based, and third-party trackers show a big jump from about $25 a month to about $900 a month billed annually (October 2026). The performance features are Enterprise-only and Meta-only, and project management is light, so teams usually pair Air with Asana or Notion for briefs.

You can find a more in-depth comparison of Air vs. Focal here.

6. Pics.io: a DAM on top of your own storage

Pics.io takes a different approach: it can sit on top of storage you already own, like Google Drive or Amazon S3, and adds tagging, search, versioning and sharing on top. That keeps files where IT already approved them and avoids paying twice for storage. Pricing is published, from around $100 to $800 a month (October 2026). G2 shows around 4.7/5 from a smaller base of about 60 reviews.

Best for: small and mid-sized teams that want DAM features without migrating files out of Google Drive or S3.

Worth knowing: AI tagging is a paid add-on, and it's a library rather than a workflow tool, so briefs, reviews and ad uploads happen elsewhere.

7. Dash: a simple, self-serve DAM for smaller brands

Dash is a self-serve DAM for small and mid-sized consumer brands, with published pricing from around £79 a month (October 2026), a free trial with no card, unlimited users and AI search and smart tagging on every plan. Setup takes days rather than months.

Best for: smaller DTC brands that want an organized, searchable library without an enterprise contract.

Worth knowing: plans cap storage and downloads, and like Pics.io it's a library rather than a workflow tool.

The DIY combo: Google Drive or Dropbox, a spreadsheet, Frame.io and Slack

Some teams skip a DAM entirely and build their own stack. Files live in Google Drive or Dropbox, a spreadsheet or Notion board tracks status and naming, Frame.io handles video review, feedback runs through Slack and email, and someone uses ChatGPT or Claude for light automation. It's cheap to start and everyone already knows the tools.

It starts breaking at more than a few dozen ad creatives a month:

  • Nobody tags consistently, so search falls back to folder names and memory

  • Naming conventions exist in a doc but drift with every new agency

  • Every approved file gets downloaded, renamed and uploaded to each ad account by hand

  • Performance data lives in Ads Manager, disconnected from the files that produced it

It's a reasonable starting point, and it's usually the setup teams are trying to escape when they look at any of the tools above. If you're on Google Drive or Dropbox today, Focal's Google Drive and Dropbox integrations bring your existing folders in automatically.

How to choose the right Canto alternative for your team

The right pick depends on what you need the DAM to do.

  • Staying on Canto is a good option if adoption and support matter most, or if you need product content and marketing assets in one system with storefront sync. If search is the main frustration, it can be worth cleaning up your metadata and trying the newer AI search before switching.

  • Bynder and Brandfolder are the usual steps up for larger organizations that want deeper brand governance and wider distribution.

  • Acquia DAM is the closest match for enterprises that rely on Canto for product content.

  • Air, Pics.io and Dash are lighter options for teams that want a modern library without an enterprise rollout.

  • Focal is a good option if your team produces ad creative at volume and the real bottlenecks are tagging, briefing, reviews with agencies, naming, getting approved creatives into Meta and TikTok and learning which ones performed. At larger companies, Focal can also run alongside a brand or product DAM, with the performance team working in Focal.

FAQ

What is the best Canto alternative?

It depends on what you use Canto for. For larger organizations focused on brand governance, Bynder and Brandfolder are the most common alternatives. For product content, Acquia DAM is the closest match. Air, Pics.io and Dash are lighter options for smaller teams. For performance ad teams that need tagging, briefs, reviews, uploads to Meta and TikTok and ad performance data around the library, Focal is built for that workflow.

How much does Canto cost?

Canto doesn't publish prices; its four packages are quoted based on team size, storage and features. Third-party estimates put most contracts in the low to mid five figures per year, but there's no verified buyer data. Ask for a quote that includes the add-ons you'll need, since reviewers mention paying extra for some features.

Why do teams switch from Canto?

The most common reasons in reviews are search that gets harder as the library grows, slow uploads and downloads with large files, and add-on costs. Performance marketing teams also look elsewhere because Canto doesn't connect assets to ad accounts or ad performance.

Which Canto alternative is best for video-heavy ad libraries?

For video-heavy ad creative, look for search that works inside the video, frame-accurate review and a direct path to ad accounts. Air offers timestamped video review and AI search. Focal analyzes every video on upload, with transcripts, scene breakdowns and search by what's said or shown, and uploads approved videos to Meta, TikTok and YouTube.
